Affiliate, to be or not to be.

Hi there,

That is the question. But first some of you may not know or you may be confused about what an Affiliate is. Well an Affiliate is basically a middle man/woman. To become an Affiliate you simply sign up to companies like www.clickbank.com or www.paydotcom.com. They are quite easy to signup to. After you have signed up you browse through the products on offer then select a product in a niche that you would like to promote. Now, here comes the hard bit. I said earlier that you are the man/woman in the middle, let me explain. You have to do all the work. You sit between  the product owner and the customer. You have to drive traffic to the product somehow. That could be Pay Per Click (PPC), Pay Per View (PPV), Write an Article, Write a Blog post, post to Twitter, post to Facebook, whatever. You have to do that. And..how do I get paid, I hear you ask? Well I’ll tell you. A cookie is placed in the browser of anyone you send to the site for that product. Then If that person buys that product any time in 30 days then you would be credited with that sale. You would then  receive a payment for the percentage of the sale.  Now, you may say that’s great, but consider this, you are not, most likely, the only one promoting that product. You could be one of hundreds or even thousands. All competing for the sale. Now don’t believe the hype of the people whose product you are promoting. You may be better than me at this, trust me I never had any real success as an Affiliate. I selected an product and proceeded to promote it through Google Adwords (PPC) Now don’t get me wrong, yes I did make some sales and made some money. But then proceeded to hand all my profit over to Google. You see, with Adwords you have to compete on Key words for that product, and boy that can be very expensive. I quickly realised this so then I set up a web site to promote the product. This reduced my outgoings tremendously but now I was into the realms of Search Engine Optimisation(SEO) That means getting up the ranks of Google, Yahoo, Bing and be on page one or two. Research suggests that people generally don’t search deeper than four pages. I know I don’t. Using S.E.O, there are two ways to approach this, pay an expert to do it for you or do it yourself.

Now having said all of that, Yes! you can make a lot of money as an Affiliate. Now go on, admit it, that surprised you didn’t it. The big Guru’s make a lot of money as Affiliates. How’s that then Ed you ask?. Well, they generally have a big list so they would send an email to their list. Now that doesn’t cost them a dollar, no Google P.P.C. Imagine having a list of 25,000 subscribers or 100,000. Here is the maths bit, math in the USA, your list is worth 1dollar per person, every  time you email it. But that said, you must have a warm responsive list. But that is another post. I’ve gone on to long already.

To you success,

Ed.

Rest in Peace Steve Jobs.

Well the great man has passed.  I wonder who will be the next great innovator of our time? The biggest mover and shaker of our time. Who knows time will tell. He had a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Many don’t know but Steve Jobs had his failures in business along the way. He just had a strong belief in himself got back up and carried on. That’s exactly what we have to do to be successful when you have a set back just get back up, learn from it, and carry on. Have belief in yourself. You will succeed. More that anything Steve Jobs was a Marketing man. He knew how to market a product. He would create an event, a buzz around his product launch. And that, added to a good product, is what makes a business successful. The Apple computer was the brain child of his business partner Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs new how to market it. That makes the difference. Look at any big successful company, it’s how they market their products and themselves that sets them apart from the rest. What’s the latest buzz word? Branding. Same thing marketing.

Hosting 2

Hi There,

One other thing that I forgot to mention with your hosting account is to choose one that has multiple or unlimited SQL servers offered with it. You may ask why? Well I’ll tell you. When you install your word press blog it uses sql on the back end. If you decided to have a membership site, that too uses sql on the back end. If you decide at a later date to have a eShop well guess what? Yes sql database on the back end. Now say you want all of these and possibly more all hosted on the one hosting account. Yes, it is possible to use just one sql database. Trust me it is so easy to damage your sql database when you don’t fully know what you are doing. Just bump it as they say. I M H O far better to have multiple databases and keep everything separate.

Do I need Hosting?

Yes!

Once again I would say absolutely. Your hosting account is your online real estate.  The place online that is your space. You buy / rent space on a server somewhere on the internet. This can be on a shared server or if you have the money a dedicated server. What happens is your domain name is pointed (connected) to your hosting account. This is done by the D N S servers but that is another post sometime. When you type in a URL,  let’s say,  www.winningwithyou.com  you are directed to my hosting account online. My advice would be to pick a solid reliable hosting provider, someone with a track record. As I’ve mentioned before this is your business. Imagine taking one of the free accounts that say a free ISP may provide. What happens if they go down for any length of time, or worse goes out of business? What happens to your business? Food for thought.

Do I need a Domain name?

Yes!

I would say absolutely. Some people say no you don’t which is  true to a certain extent. Those people who say that you can start a Internet Business without a domain name are usually the ones trying to sell you their Affiliate product. And what you end up doing is sending your suspect to their site and domain name.  In the offline business world if you were setting up a business you would give your business a name. So why would you not in the online world? It’s fairly easy to do you, the hardest bit is choosing a good name for your business. Here is a tip for you why not try an expired domain name? These are domain names where the previous owner has let the registration of them being the owner of that name expire for whatever reason. The point is that you could , if you are lucky find a really good name which has age and page rank, which is good when trying to get ranked in the search engines. There are plenty of companies offering to sell you a domain name, and a few offering expired domains below are a couple you can try. I use 1AND1 a bit more money but solid as a rock. This is business you get what you pay for.  For expired domains go to the Daddy of the internet Here!

Tools

Hi,

To create your own web site you need to use some sort or  Web page editor. Now, here you have a choice, do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you.  Or if you want to be hard core and you know what you are doing you can use just a standard text editor like notepad or any of the free editors available. Doing it your self does require you to know HTML though. But for mortals  like me a tool that I use and it’s free is Kompozer.  It is a great tool that allows you to see visually the changes that you are making on your web page. There is of coarse another way, that is to download a Web page/site template and modify it. This is where Kompozer comes into it’s own. I wouldn’t recommend using Word  however but the choice is yours.  Go on have a go. I all stands you in good stead. Below is a download link to Kompozer it just takes you to their web site.

Go do a dump

Hi There,

Do you ever feel over whelmed, don’t know where to start. So many things to do, all this stuff in your head, information overload? Well try this, this is powerful. It really works. Sit down, get several sheets of A4 paper and a pencil. Oh! you might want grab a cup of tea or coffee whatever is your poison. Now take one of the sheets of paper. Now write on the paper everything that you need to do, yep go on just dump it out of your head onto the paper in no particular order. Now doesn’t that feel better? Ah a clear head! I,e eat some food, take a bath, build a Web site, get a Domain get a Blog, build a list whatever. Now, when you think you have everything down, go down the list that you’ve just made and rate your tasks in order of importance say 1 for the most important or urgent to 5 or 10 for the least important or urgent.. That’s up to you whatever works for you.
Now here is the good part. On another sheet of paper transfer all of the 1’s to that sheet. Now repeat the process with the 2’s on another sheet of paper. And so on till you got down on separate sheets all the 1’s, 2’s, 3’s and so on. Now put them in order 1’s, on top all the way to however many you settled on. Ta dah…. There is your running order. There you have it folks planning. You can use this process for for almost anything. Hope this helps.

Holiday

Hi there,

I’m just back from a very much needed relaxing break, with my wife, in Cornwall. I ‘s a very beautiful part of the UK. For those who don’t know it is the south west tip of the UK. I don’t do much on holiday I’m not one of those people who dash around doing this and doing that no. I could just sit there and read a book. We did some walking along the coast. Lovely sea views. Had a meal out. Thoroughly enjoyed the break.

Got to keep alert!

Hi there,

After that tip I gave you yesterday I had a quick check on my site. To my horror I found that I had some of the same issues that I mentioned. Just shows you got to keep alert. I believe that it is worth while knowing a little html so that you can do somethings yourself and be less reliant on others. Although if you can afford to pay someone to do these things well that’s all good. Here is a good site that can help you learn as much or as little as you want. You can dip in and out at your leisure. Best of all it’s FREE!
