Affiliate, to be or not to be.

Hi there,

That is the question. But first some of you may not know or you may be confused about what an Affiliate is. Well an Affiliate is basically a middle man/woman. To become an Affiliate you simply sign up to companies like or They are quite easy to signup to. After you have signed up you browse through the products on offer then select a product in a niche that you would like to promote. Now, here comes the hard bit. I said earlier that you are the man/woman in the middle, let me explain. You have to do all the work. You sit between  the product owner and the customer. You have to drive traffic to the product somehow. That could be Pay Per Click (PPC), Pay Per View (PPV), Write an Article, Write a Blog post, post to Twitter, post to Facebook, whatever. You have to do that. do I get paid, I hear you ask? Well I’ll tell you. A cookie is placed in the browser of anyone you send to the site for that product. Then If that person buys that product any time in 30 days then you would be credited with that sale. You would then  receive a payment for the percentage of the sale.  Now, you may say that’s great, but consider this, you are not, most likely, the only one promoting that product. You could be one of hundreds or even thousands. All competing for the sale. Now don’t believe the hype of the people whose product you are promoting. You may be better than me at this, trust me I never had any real success as an Affiliate. I selected an product and proceeded to promote it through Google Adwords (PPC) Now don’t get me wrong, yes I did make some sales and made some money. But then proceeded to hand all my profit over to Google. You see, with Adwords you have to compete on Key words for that product, and boy that can be very expensive. I quickly realised this so then I set up a web site to promote the product. This reduced my outgoings tremendously but now I was into the realms of Search Engine Optimisation(SEO) That means getting up the ranks of Google, Yahoo, Bing and be on page one or two. Research suggests that people generally don’t search deeper than four pages. I know I don’t. Using S.E.O, there are two ways to approach this, pay an expert to do it for you or do it yourself.

Now having said all of that, Yes! you can make a lot of money as an Affiliate. Now go on, admit it, that surprised you didn’t it. The big Guru’s make a lot of money as Affiliates. How’s that then Ed you ask?. Well, they generally have a big list so they would send an email to their list. Now that doesn’t cost them a dollar, no Google P.P.C. Imagine having a list of 25,000 subscribers or 100,000. Here is the maths bit, math in the USA, your list is worth 1dollar per person, every  time you email it. But that said, you must have a warm responsive list. But that is another post. I’ve gone on to long already.

To you success,

    Hey Ed,

Pretty good explanation of what an affiliate is. You are right about the big gurus. They have built up their list and are able to blast an email to it when they promote a new product. They will definitely get some sales because of who they are and the relationship they’ve built with their list.

But don’t worry. Keep up the great work and you’ll eventually get there too! We all have to start at the very beginning.

    Thanks for this explanation.

Thanks for the encouragement. It’s gratifying trying to do this the right way, much like you, and not ripping people off.

    Hi, Ed,
You did a really good job explaining the process of what an affiliate it and how an affiliate makes an income. It’s quite a process, isn’t it, when you mention all of the steps required for an affiliate to make a sale. The middle person does a lot of work for a piece of the commission, but when they didn’t have to do anything to produce the product to sell, it’s a fair transaction. Keep up the good work, Ed!
